travel diary: just for mum | chamonix, france

By January 13, 2014 europe, france, travel, travel diary

At the request of my mummy, here is a post about the past week of musings of life in Chamonix.

We have been told the snow is not amazing, but being Australian, this looks pretty good to me. We have mostly been attending the slopes near our house. Brevent.

This particular day we decided to take the camera and get some pix up at the top…

And I tried my first Black Run. For those that know what this is, I needn’t tell you I may or may not have snowflaked for most some of it.

For those that don’t, it’s a really really really technical, dangerous and difficult piste (snow run) where death or broken bones are more than likely. So kudos to me…

Luckily this weekend we were getting a visit from friends I met on my US adventure. They arrived late friday night and as a good host should, I had a platter of french cheese, pastries and wine at the ready…

The morning was spent having a lazy breakfast of Moroccan baked eggs with a side of avocado + buttery mushrooms, cooked by yours truly…

Friends can’t visit Chamonix and not visit Aguille de Midi.

And me trying to perfect my photo jump…

I haven’t quite got it down pat yet.

Then we discovered a new section of the viewing platform, the sky bar… but you must wear these fashionable slippers…

But the view was worth it…

It’s quite dicey staring down through the glass…Just for Mum {Chamonix life} | Cream. - 30 Just for Mum {Chamonix life} | Cream. - 29

Afterwards we warmed ourselves at our favourite pizza joint, Casa Valerio.

Then it was time for Apres Ski. No one need know we didn’t ski.

We have been told that Chambre Neuf  do a great apres ski with a band so we thought we would check it out. We were disappointed to find that Saturday night is the only night the band don’t play. Shame. The vibe was still great though so it wasn’t all bad.

Starving and merry, we popped on over to Caleche for dinner. It’s quintessentially Savoyard and cosy.

We ordered a bottle of champagne to start… we do have special guests after all…

As it often is, it was an entree, main, dessert kind of night. This is the Snails with Savoie parsley butter

They didn’t last long…Just for Mum {Chamonix life} | Cream. - 45

And this is the Trilogy of salmon, rillette, tartare and smoked fish with dill cream

For mains the mister went for the Braised beef cheek stew in twelve hour wine sauce Mondeuse Savoy…

Me? I opted for Diot pot, hock and Magland smoked sausage, braised cabbage…

And no French meal is complete without Raclette… I highly recommend you dip the bread into the beef stew sauce…

Then the cheese….

And wash it down with a French red… Yes that’s my expert opinion!

For dessert we had the Vacherin Mont Blanc meringue with vanilla brown and caramel sauce…

And the Tarte Tatin with apples & ice cream…

And the Artisan Waffle “Mr. Dujardin” with caramel ice cream & fleur de sel…

Not a bad night at all.

The next day we sent off our guests French style with Galettes. They are basically crepes stuffed with egg & molten cheese, or whatever extras you wish to add.

I’m afraid this was the first time I attempted to make these and unfortunately they were not a photo-worthy success. Seems like I might need some more taste testers while I perfect it…

Hope you had a nice week and mum, are you happy now?
