travel diary: a perfect proposal | nyc, usa

By February 14, 2014 travel, travel diary, usa

New York. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps.

I loved Washington DC, but nothing compares to NYC.

This was especially exciting because I was not only with my brother Navid, but meeting our other little brother Jamal, who had a brief hiatus (40 hours to be exact) from his band Hands Like Houses.

We arrived to a very grey, rainy and cold city. We chose this day of all days to be frugal and catch the train in lieu of a cab. After 3 trains, we traipsed through the rain, through blocks and blocks of dreary Brooklyn searching for a cafe where a friend-of-a-friend held the key to our dry, warm sanctuary.

We finally made it and crashed almost immediately.

After a good nights rest, the 3 musketeers headed off for a morning in now-sunny Brooklyn…

Then a wander around Brooklyn flea markets. Navid had died & gone to heaven… he goes positively loopy for flea markets…

Now being a Saturday, and a very rare occasion that all three of us are together, let alone in the greatest city in the world, Navid had planned a surprise for us.

All we knew is that we had to look dapper and we had to leave at 7pm sharp. Easy peasy.

At the train station I realised I forgot my earrings. Sigh.

Jamal kindly said “go back, you’ll feel better if your outfit is complete”. What brother understands the importance of earrings to an outfit? Alarm bells should have gone off immediately.

A short cab ride later we arrived to Central Park, my earrings in tow, and hopped onto a horse and carriage to carry us in… how very Carrie of me…

After a short and picturesque ride, we arrived to the restaurant, which I now know to be Loeb Central Park Boat House Restaurant. Turns out Navid had planned a fancy dinner for the three of us. How lovely I though.

We arrived and got stuck into some cocktails while we waited for our table.

About 10 minutes in a waitress brought me a rose. I immediately advised her that she had the wrong person. She however, insisted she did not.

I turned to Navid, thanking him for being a sweetheart and getting me a rose.

He laughed and told me to read the note.

I started to read the note, only to realise it was a photo. Of me and my love.

I looked to Navid and he nodded. Then of course I started to cry. The mister had told me he’d gone camping. CAMPING.

But he had sneakily said that, jumped on a plane, and flown all the way to NYC to surprise me.

Lucky I was wearing a nice dress. It’s Alannah Hill, and it’s so old I can’t find it anywhere online. So here’s another GORGEOUS gold dress that would do the trick.

The first photo was of us in 2007 when we met (we actually met in 2006, but i’ll let that slide). The note on the back said that I was going to receive 7 roses, 1 for each year together. Awwww.

So every 5 minutes I received another rose accompanied by a photo of that year (documenting both our love and our various hairstyles). 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. All with sweet words and directions.

I had to be quick to read them before the tears washed the words away…

About 30 minutes later, I had all seven roses and I finally knew where to go…

I made haste to the fountain where my love was waiting…

After a long embrace, he walked me to the bridge and proposed. And of course I said yes.

We were both pretty happy about it…

And I was also in love with my new hand candy…

Still in shock and happy beyond belief, the four of us enjoyed dinner at the restaurant overlooking Central Park…

I think I can safely say that NYC will always hold a special place in my heart.
