Restaurant Review: Kagawa | Dickson

By February 15, 2014 canberra restaurant reviews, cbr foodie

There’s nothing better than a tasty and cheap Japanese meal.

In Australia we are so spoiled with cuisines from all over the world, especially Asian cuisine. I have never appreciated this until living overseas and realizing what varied food options we have compared to other countries.

From Japanese to Vietnamese or Korean to Chinese or Malaysian to Balinese, you could eat a different Asian cuisine every night and still not scratch the surface.

When Friday night rolled round, it was balmy and hot.  You know those nights where you can’t wear much more than loose cotton clothing and open toed shoes. Forget make up, it will melt right off your face.

So pretty much the perfect weather for a light Japanese dinner with friends.

Luckily, nothing is far in Canberra. Dickson, home to Canberra’s  Chinatown is just around the corner from where our friends, who are kindly taking care of us, live.

After a short walk, we arrived at Kagawa, one of the local Japanese restaurants. I had actually never been before.

Much like all Japanese restaurants, the décor is bright and colourful. A bit too bright for my liking if I’m being honest.

They serve all the Japanese favourites and of course several types of sake and Japanese beer.

We ordered the Miso soup and Edemame to start…

With the Pork gyoza to follow, which are my favourite…

Then the Salmon sashimi

Still hungry we ordered the Teriyaki chicken, which didn’t last long…

And the Katsu Don

And Greg realized you could make, or invented as he’d like to think, wasabi mayonnaise, which we all ate with chopsticks like civilised adults.

I always find Japanese fun because you all just dig in and it’s a bit messy…

I found the food at Kagawa simple, tasty, fresh and cheap. Just how good Japanese should be really.

After the short stroll home, we were all in need of cold showers.

I’m wearing a Supre cropped top + vintage high waisted shorts + Wittner clogs.

It was just one of those nights you wished you had aircon. But hey, I am already longing for this now that I’m back in freezing Chamonix.
