Breakfast In The Berra: Sweet Bones | Braddon

By November 25, 2014 breakfast in the berra, cbr foodie

I know I know. I really need to get out of Braddon. I always aim to venture further but there is still so many places there I haven’t been & it’s close to my house so I’m not really that sorry.

I’d dined at Sweet Bones before when it was located at Londsdale St Traders however I’d heard it had changed digs so decided to pop past on a sunny Saturday morning. The venue is a vegan cafe/bakery specialising in delicious & wholesome vegan food and baked treats.

The space is small & bright with the typical colourful trendy furniture you’ve seen at all the latest cafe’s in town.

I like the rock & roll mexicano feel they have going, especially with these cool table numbers.

Owned by Emily & Russell Brindley, Emily is a long time vegan who wanted to share her love of vegan food and show Canberrans how delicious eating animal free can be.

The only exception is that they serve cow’s milk coffees – which I think is brilliant because let’s face it, people are pretty particular when it comes to coffee and it’s alot easier to convince a non vegan to come to breakfast with you with the promise of their favourite coffee.

They have a range of breakfast & lunch options + a menu dedicated to smoothies, coffee & other liquid goodness. Breakfast includes choices of a big breakfast ($16), pancakes ($15), granola ($13), porridge ($8) or toast. The lunch menu is vast with everything from burgers to nachos & burritos to pad thai rolls.

Our day started with drinks. Cappuccinos for my brother & his girlfriend.

And the iced coffee with almond milk & maple for me.

My brother is a Sweet Bones local so he has eaten through the whole menu. I was drawn to the big brekky but he said it was one of the less delightful items from the menu.

He convinced me to have the breakfast burger ($15). It’s not the prettiest of dishes but the tofu scramble was to die for! So spicy and creamy. It’s served on a turkish roll with lettuce, tomato, onion, tabasco sauce, ketchup and hummus topped with their homemade smokey coconut bacon.

The mister had the boneyard burrito ($15). It’s stuffed with brown rice, chipotle pecan pesto, onion and capsicum fajita mix, homemade refried white beans, queso, salsa, cilantro sour cream, sweet potato and massaged kale served with a side of corn chips and salsa. Yes you read that correctly. Massage kale. Probably the most hipster of items i’ve seen on a menu. Nobody likes a stressed out kale.

I was hoping to try some of their baked goods but was soooo.full I could only gaze. Although I was disappointed to find the only treat that wasn’t made with processed sugar was the raw balls. Wouldn’t you love a bakery that stocked sweet treats made with honey or maple?
