Fresh orange zest and maple are what make this old fashioned something special.
Recipe for Orange & Maple Old Fashioned by Anisa Sabet for The Macadames.
Today’s recipe is one of my favourite whiskey drinks, the old fashioned. Typically made with sugar/sugar syrup, bitters and whiskey, today i’ve used maple in place of sugar and added a dash of orange zest which I love. Originally invented to hide the taste of bootleg whiskey’s, with good quality whiskey, it comes into it’s own.
I am really enjoying shooting drinks as I love the look of them in photos and I was on a mission to shoot with all my new boards by my general photography lifesaver, Angony from Food Styling Backgrounds. Isn’t this white board DIVINE? In real life it is such good quality, weighs a ton and is such a pleasure to shoot on.
I hope you enjoy this recipe and i’d love to know what you think.

What you need:
- Squat tumblers
- Cocktail stirrer
Ingredients (makes 1):
- Peel of orange
- 30ml maple syrup
- Few dashes of Angosturo Bitters
- 50ml bourbon
- Orange rind
1. Gently cut a piece of orange peel, being careful not to bend it. Hold the piece of orange peel between finger and thumb over the glass. Quickly bend the orange peel and run the peel over the edge of the glass so the oil settles on the rim.
2. Divide ice among your glasses. Add the maple syrup and a few dashes of bitters. Pour over the bourbon and use a cocktail stirrer to slightly stir. Garnish with fresh orange rind and drink immediately.
