Restaurant Review: Jamie’s Italian | Civic

Jamies Italian | The Macadame - 07

So as I’ve mentioned, I recently took a trip home to boring old Canberra. I tend to hate on my poor little hometown. I guess that’s because like most people who come from a small town, I had dreams of living in more glamorous cities such as Sydney, Melbourne or even New York.

However having been living in the small alpine town of Chamonix, I really have begun to appreciate the perks of a small town. I kind of like not being able to go out without bumping into someone I know.

So after a 44 hour journey travelling through Geneva, Dubai and Bangkok we finally took our descent into Sydney just as the sun was coming up.

I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful view to welcome me home…

It was a mild 40 degrees upon arrival, a mere 50 degree difference from what we’re used to.  I was so ready for the heat but not quite this heat. Whoah!

I love coming back home and feeling like I have never left. Canberra is one of those cities that feels like it never changes. However, in the 10 months I have been gone, my little Canberra has in fact changed quite a bit.

Loads of new restaurants, bars and shops have popped up everywhere. All with their own unique style of food, fit out and service.

Which is perfect for me, because there’s nothing I love more than catching up with friends and trying new restaurants.

First on my hit list was Jamie’s Italian. Having followed Jamie Oliver throughout his career, I have been inspired by his charisma and his healthy, sustainable approach to food.

He is not only an amazing chef, but he is an advocate for improving the nutritional quality of food to children at schools. Check out his inspiring TED Talk here.

His Canberra restaurant is part of his Jamie’s Italian chain, having also opened up in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. The space is located in the heart of the city, is large and open with a nice covered outdoor area to enjoy the summer sun.

The restaurant has a homely feel that almost feels like you’re dining in a gigantic kitchen at someone’s house. The colourful vegetables and food-stuffs hanging from the walls add to this casual vibe.

The waiters do try to do the whole fine-dining service thing, which doesn’t really work in the setting. It can get kind of awkward, especially when the wait staff can’t remember the specials. I think a more casual approach to service would be more fitting for the style of restaurant. But hey that’s just my opinion.

The menu consists of Italian inspired antipastis, pastas, mains, fish, sides and desserts. With a decent wine list to match.

I just love the design of the menus, aren’t they cool?

I especially love that most of the pastas can be ordered in an entrée or main size, perfect for light lunches or if you just fancy trying 2 dishes.

I actually managed to get to Jamie’s twice during my brief visit, so was lucky enough to sample a variety of the dishes.

For starters, I think the planks are the way to go. Based on a per head basis, large wooden planks are loaded with Italian cured meats, cheeses, sweet chillis, olives and breads are brought to your table to share with your friends…

Overall the food was fresh, packed with flavor, beautifully presented and although not cheap, it definitely won’t break the bank.

See in Perth Jamie’s Italian is considered really cheap. I love going there! The rabbit pasta is my fav! Packed full of flavour and really fresh.
