Breakfast In The Berra: Autolyse | Braddon

I haven’t tasted sourdough quite like this since visiting Boudin Bakery in San Francisco. There you’ll be in bakery heaven with wall to wall breads. They serve their famous Clam Chowder in a bread bowl. Yes I am serious. And it’s seriously delicious.

Autolyse opened up on Lonsdale in 2013 and has been the talk of the town since. ‘Autolyse’ is a term used by artisan bakers to describe the extra rest period for the dough to ensure that it attains optimum moisture and texture.

Serving brunch/lunch from 7am – 5pm every day, they are much more than a bakery.

The decor is fresh with white glossy tiles, dark furniture and a large imposing open kitchen.

It has a Parisian-bakery feel with white clad bakers & baskets of freshly baked bread. They have something for everyone; including their famed sourdough, wholemeal or rye breads and seedy loaves (made with linseed, chia & quinoa). All breads are hand-made with imported French flour – taking deliveries of over 50 x 25kg bags every week. You can tell that a lot of effort has been put into quality, ensuring all their breads & pastries are maded from the best ingredients and baked fresh all day.

For sweet tooths, they have mountains of chocolate croissants, millefeuille (my fav) and cakes.

The menu is simple and no-fuss. Everything is under $18 and although the options are a bit different, they’re not overly hipster. Which means no massaged kale or cucumber foam to be found.

Specials are scrawled on the tiles and the staples are on the menu.

There are a handful of seats inside but it’s the outside seating you’ll want to snag.

I ordered the 4 egg French omelette with gruyere ($13).

It was perfectly sublime. Fluffy eggs with mountains of molten gruyere.

The mister had the smoked trout salad ($16.90). Fresh cruchy salad, soft & tender smoked trout smothered in a yoghurt dressing.

The real stand out was the French toast ($14). I had serious food envy when this baby came out. The bread was so soft, moist & cinnamony – marrying perfectly with the yoghurt & berries.

We sat in the sun and whittled away a lazy Sunday morning. Before jetting off I had to try one of the sweet treats, settling on the millefeuille. The pastry was light, puffy & slightly crisp and the filling so creamy and decadant. Despite being rather full, I devoured the whole thing along with a second coffee.

Although they don’t serve the best coffee in Braddon, it’s definitely not the worst.

Overall I love Autolyse because they are a no-fuss bakery cafe that serve excellent food at really great value prices. Pop on over next time you’re in Braddon and have a millefeuille for me.
